Backbone
Park Hosts "Christmas in July" Saturday
Posted 15 July 2008
Backbone State
Park South Lake Campground is hosting “Christmas in July” this
Saturday, July 19, where campers compete for bragging rights with the
best decorations on their campsite.
Activities begin in the morning with canoe and kayak races on the lake
as well as making Christmas decorations in the park. After lunch, there
will be games at the host site.
Games include a snowball race [running while holding a golf ball with a
spoon], Christmas stocking [pillowcase/potato sack] race and a slippery
slide. Refreshments include Kool-ade and Christmas cookies.
Beginning around 5:30 p.m., Santa Clause will make an appearance with a
team of draft horses and offer wagon rides until dark. At dark, the
judges will review each of the decorated campsites then prizes will be
awarded. There is no cost to participate, and free will donations are
accepted for the wagon rides.
“It’s getting pretty competitive because they started bribing the
judges with fudge and Christmas cookies last year,” said Mary Shea,
park manager at Backbone. “We have had a lot of interest for this
weekend; a lot of reservations.”
The only campsites available for reservation are non-electric. Campers
wanting a first come, first serve electric site should plan to arrive
early in the week.
The Backbone State Park friends group will be selling Christmas
decorations at the campground host campsite.
