Tomatoes
Okay to Consume
Posted 18 July 2008
The US Food and
Drug Administration lifted the salmonella warning for tomatoes
yesterday, Thursday, July 17, after about two months of warning
consumers not to eat one of summer's highlights.
Warnings still are posted for hot peppers, including fresh jalapenos
and serranos, and fresh cilantro.
Federal health officials advise people most at risk of contracting
salmonella - including the elderly and people with weak immune systems
- should avoid any dishes that may contain the above mentioned
vegetables, such as fresh salsa.
Investigators still don't know what caused this year's recent
salmonella outbreak, which now has sickened 1,220 people in 42 states,
including Iowa - the earliest falling ill on April 10 and the latest on
July 4. Indications are that the outbreak is lessening as less people
become ill.
For every salmonella case the Centers for Disease Control confirms, it
estimates there are 30 to 40 more that go undocumented.
