NICC Enrollment Figures Approach 5400 Students
Posted 9 February 2010
The troubled economy, unemployment, a change of career direction and steps to keep college students enrolled in school are sending record numbers of northeast Iowans to Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), according to official enrollment reports. NICC is seeing a dramatic increase in students’ credit hour enrollment, from 45,037 credit hours to 51,219, an increase of 14 percent compared to the same period in 2009. A record headcount of 5398 students contributed to the higher credit hour figures.

With an increase in headcount of 10 percent, this spring marks the third consecutive semester of double-digit enrollment growth, and NICC also typically experiences a slight drop from the previous fall semester’s enrollment to the following spring semester that trend reversed slightly. Another finding from the official report shows that more NICC students are enrolled full time than in previous years.

Compared to enrollment data from last spring, 22 percent more NICC students are enrolled at the college full time. Students taking at least 12 credits of coursework during the semester are classified as full-time students. The five-year enrollment figures from 2005-2010 show that the number of full-time students in the college district has consistently hovered at approximately 2000, until this year’s report, when the number jumped to 2499 full-time students.
