NICC Phi Theta Kappa Students Earn Recognition
Posted 17 March 2010
The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Chapter at Northeast Iowa Community College’s (NICC) Calmar campus received awards at the Phi Theta Kappa Regional Conference for Iowa, Feb. 18-19, in Boone. The chapter earned a Five Star Chapter designation, the highest honor awarded to chapters in the organization. Two individual NICC students and a chapter co-advisor also received honors at the conference.

The Beta Epsilon Phi Chapter won a Five Star Chapter Award for the sixth consecutive year, and picked up a second honor, the Scholarship Hallmark Award for the Iowa Region. The awards qualify the NICC chapter to receive international recognition at the International Convention in Orlando, Fla., on April 8-10. Calmar’s Beta Epsilon Phi chapter receives annual recognition for its scholarly work and service in the community. Locally and internationally, Calmar campus Phi Theta Kappa members make an impact by volunteering for Better World Books, Relay for Life, the Heart Connection, Ronald McDonald House, Project Graduation, Operation Green, Cuddle for Cancer and college diversity initiatives.

“Achieving and maintaining Five Star status requires the continuing high level of members’ involvement and dedication of the members to the goals of scholarship, leadership and service. Our members add their own unique energy to chapter projects,” said Beta Epsilon Phi Chapter co-advisor Kathy Howes, an NICC psychology/education instructor. “It's an achievement that few chapters attain, and fewer still are able to maintain. Our chapter has met this challenge with enthusiasm and dedication each year. They are wonderful to work with, and we are grateful for the opportunity to work with them,” said Howes.

At the regional conference Dawanda Ryder received the
Distinguished Chapter President Award, and Phi Theta Kappa
members elected Teresa Dehning as Northeast Vice President
for the Iowa Region of Phi Theta Kappa. Ryder, an NICC
Associate in Arts student from Waukon, now qualifies for
    international level competition.

Dehning, an NICC Associate in Arts-Human Services student from Decorah, was elected to the regional officer post for her service and chapter leadership. Chapter officers who display outstanding dedication and leadership receive awards and greater responsibilities in the organization.

The Phi Theta Kappa organization awarded Kathy Howes with a Special Advisor Award. This award is given to advisors who have provided dedicated leadership to their chapters. Phi Theta Kappa also selected Howes to serve as a Faculty Scholar at the International Honors Institute in Orange, Calif., on June 12-18.

Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for two-year colleges that provides qualifying students many ongoing opportunities for scholarships and leadership development. Community college students who join Phi Theta Kappa reap numerous academic benefits, including portfolio development and scholarships to attend a four-year college or university. To be eligible for Phi Theta Kappa membership, a student must have completed at least 12 credits of transfer-level coursework and earn a 3.5 or higher grade point average. The organization holds induction ceremonies each spring to welcome new members and chapter officers.

For more information about the Phi Theta Kappa organization at the Calmar campus, contact Howes at (563) 562-3263, ext. 305.
