NICC,
UW-Platteville
Instructor Invited to Oxford Round Table
Posted 20 June
2010
A Northeast Iowa
Community College (NICC) sociology instructor, Natalie Kozelka,
received an invitation to the Oxford Round Table this July 11-16 in
Oxford, England. At the prestigious academic conference, Kozelka will
submit a paper that discusses the cultural impact that natural
disasters have on children. For 20 years, the Oxford Round Table has
brought together scholars to promote education, art, science, religion
and charity by means of academic conferences and publication of
scholarly papers.
“My intention is to submit a paper concerning the impact that natural
disaster plays with respect to global adoption and how this impacts
children, at times derogatorily. I say derogatorily because very often
we do not have time to prepare in such instances and there can be a
lack of concern for the cultural implications,” said Kozelka, who cited
Hurricane Katrina, the earthquake in Haiti and the tsunami that struck
Indonesia as prime examples in her argument.
Kozelka has taught in the college’s sociology department since August
2008. She teaches Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems,
Introduction to Psychology and Psychology of Human Relations at the
NICC Dubuque Center. The Benton, Wis., resident also teaches sociology
at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
As a scholar and college instructor, Kozelka says that it is critical
for teachers to stay current in their respective disciplines because
students directly benefit in their studies. “I believe this form of
scholarship makes me a well-rounded instructor with life experience
that I can relay to my students. I also get a feel for global needs and
can better explore the skills that our workforce requires to better
prepare students,” she said.
The Oxford Round Table seeks to provide an interdisciplinary forum for
the discussion of contemporary issues that affect the public good in
all its various forms and ramifications. Past themes of meetings have
included considerations of human rights, social welfare, economics,
religion, ethics, morals, law, medicine and the liberal arts and
sciences. Each session is designed around a format that enables
participants to present papers and to engage in discussions regarding
those papers in both formal colloquy and informal dialogue.
