State Support Sought For Field Of Dreams and Ballpark Heaven Project
Posted 5 January, 2012

On Monday, December 19, a contingent of local elected Dyersville officials traveled to Des Moines to meet with State leaders to seek their support for the Field of Dreams Preservation and All-Star Ballpark Heaven Project in this upcoming legislative session.

Governor Terry Branstad, Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds, Economic Development Director Debi Durham and State Representative Steve Lukan (R-32) met with Mayor Jim Heavens, Councilmen Dan Willenborg and Bob Platz, City Administrator Mick Michel, as well as Jacque Rahe, Executive Director of Dyersville Economic Development Corporation, and president and CEO of Go the Distance Baseball, Denise Stillman, along with her husband and advisor Mike Stillman. The group met in the Governor’s formal reception area to present the Project and what it will mean to the future of Iowa tourism.

“We are very encouraged by the response we received from the Governor and his advisors,” said Mayor Heavens.  “This project requires state economic support for it to become a reality in this next year. The potential of so many direct and indirect jobs associated with this project, along with the exposure for our area and the entire State of Iowa, make this a very exciting project for all involved. ”

Also instrumental in garnering support in this pre-legislative session period, Senator Tom Hancock (D-16) has been a terrific supporter of the Project since he met the Stillmans during their first visit to Dyersville in November.  “Well, the Field of Dreams movie is near and dear to my heart,” said Senator Hancock.  “But, more importantly, the idea of preserving the movie site and attracting a great deal more people to it is vital to Iowa’s tourism industry, as well as the economy of both the Dyersville and Greater Dubuque area.”

“I am very excited about what this project will do for my district, in particular in terms of job creation. With a total capital investment of $38 million, many Iowans will see benefit from this project along with the potential of bringing in a generous amount of tourist dollars to the area,” said Representative Lukan. “Not only that, but it’s going to be a fun experience for our young ball players.”
Rahe, who is spearheading the local economic efforts to attract this investment in the Dyersville area,
said she and other local economic development leaders will commission an economic impact study to evaluate the full impact of the Project and any additional amenities they will need to attract to support  area residents and future visitors from across the country.

Dyersville City Administrator, Mick Michel, with the authorization of the Dyersville City Council is studying the Project’s impact on sewer and water needs, should the city choose to annex the property.  Those results are anticipated in the next couple of weeks.

The Field of Dreams Preservation and All-Star Ballpark Heaven Project is slated to begin in late 2012 and officially open in April 2014.  The original movie site with the famous field and rows of corn will be preserved for future generations while the remainder of the Lansing family farm will nurture thousands of future baseball and softball players on, ultimately, 24 fields during week-long national tournaments and in a year-round, indoor training facility on the property.
